The descendants of Peter Murphy

Peter Murphy of Ireland (dates unknown) is as far back as John (the present one, b.1933) has been able to trace the Murphy lineage. Peter's grandson Benjamin Murphy was the father of John Wesley Murphy who, with his wife Sidney Mercer Murphy, moved from Belmont County, Ohio, into Washington Township in 1838. They became the ancestors of a large extended family of Murphys who still populate the township. Their son, another John Murphy, married Eliza Swaney and begat another John Wesley Murphy who become the parent of William Earl Murphy, the father of Marilyn, Jeanne, John and Walt, the present (2003) generation of elder Murphys; whose grandchildren, the present youngsters, represent the tenth generation of Murphys going back to Peter. It was William Earl's sister, Esta (1901-1935), who married Carlton Hursey and united the families who now hold annual reunions.
